Tan Ying Hsien MW

Master of WineLead Founding Critic & Board Advisor

As a lawyer for more than two decades specialising in banking law and financial services regulation, Ying Hsien came to wine through the same analytical rigour he brought to the bar. His interest began during university studies in the United Kingdom in 1983, and by 2010 he had set aside a legal career to pursue wine full-time. He became a Master of Wine in 2015, holding one of the most demanding credentials in the wine world.

Today he runs Taberna Wine Academy in Singapore, consults to restaurants on their wine programmes, judges at international competitions, and writes about wine. A member of the Commanderie de Bordeaux, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, and the Ordre des Côteaux de Champagne, he brings with him decades of experience to Asia Wine Review's methodology. He also leads the category of Burgundy & Burgundy-adjacent wines at AWR, bringing an advocate's precision to every score.
